Stuff we Made!!! Merry Christmas!

We were busy right up to the very last minute...literally! Brian was buffing and wrapping right before we went to his parents Christmas party!

We made lots of Christmas bulbs, birdhouses, a couple of Harry Potter Wands. A garden dibble, an Argentine flag pen for Ryan's mission, some boxes, some potpourri bowls and a razor set for Brian's dad. Yeah, we made a little sawdust!

The Hobbs gang got together at Greg's house a week before the Holiday. Since Christmas was on Sunday this year, it seemed the thing to do. Mom got super fun socks for everyone to wear, the kids are showing off a few. Karson was in on the little secret and couldn't wait to help pass them out.

Turkey, potatoes, dressing...it was a Thanksgiving blessing. Tam's family came to Idaho Falls for the festive food laden frolic. Since my house isn't big enough for a sit down meal for 18, we planned ahead and reserved the church. Little did we know that it would be as fun as it was. The nieces and nephews played basketball, football, soccer, target shooting and hide and seek all day long. They definitely had a great time. We also had a table that we all could sit at for our meal. Of course there was more food than was needed, as usual. All in all, it was a great holiday.

Little trip with the parents...

We got together with my parents this last weekend and headed to Yellowstone. OK, we took the long way through Nevada City, but when we got there it was closed for the season. Apparently the state has taken it over! Bummer. So we headed to West Yellowstone, both parents were exhausted so we grabbed a quick bite and went to our rooms to relax. The next day we headed to Yellowstone, didn't see much in the line of wildlife, it is still way to warm out there! Anyway, we saw some pretty sights then when mom started feeling ill we headed for home. It was short, sweet but still fun! Love my parents and my very patient husband!

Tomato, Tomato...we have lots of Tomatoes, so it was time to add some onion, pepper, cilantro...etc! Grandma Weeks gave me the recipe years back so it was time to mix a batch up! All day it boiled down, until I had 9 jelly jars of salsa...just 9! Yeah, it is still worth it!

Sometimes Primary can be a wild time...today was one of them. To see how well the children knew their songs for the program, we came up with something really fun! If they sang loud and knew the words...the bees got out and stung Sister Brown...they got to put the red dots on my face. You have never heard such singing!!!! Time to travel! Brian and I met Greg and Rachel's family in Victoria, BC for a little fun, frolic and family pictures!! We had a blast getting to know each other and saw many wonderful things but the best part of the trip was just spending time with them and the kids!!!

Brian and I marked out another item off of our bucket list. We took a pottery class at BYUI. We couldn't wait to get muddy, and trust me we did. We tried to throw a pot on the wheel or it tried to throw us. Let's just say, we won't be be doing this in our spare time. Anyway, we did enjoy creating items from the slab method. These are our results.

Christmas at the Brown house is always a good time. This year we got to surprise Brian's parents. Their 5oth anniversary is in March, so the brothers got together on their gift! We wrote a little poem and they got their "presents" to inform them of their present to be! So, we party in March as well and most likely through the summer.

Our Hobbs family Christmas Party was all about service! We gathered at Greg's house for a little festive fun. It was really cool because as a family we put together approx. 200 humanitarian kits. The whole family was involved, well, OK, Chloe just watched. We made a great assembly line and did we ever cruise. Shari, Rachel, Mom and I folded towels...all 400, while the others stuffed them in bags and added the other items...soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes and combs. The whole time we kept talking about why and who we were helping. It was a lot of fun working that hard.

Festival of Trees

Brian's woodturning group put a tree together for the festival of trees this year and we got the "privilege" of putting it together! It was a blustery cold day when we had to deliver it to the venue...what a spectacle, driving down the street with Christmas in the back of the truck. It turned out pretty good!

So, we got home around 7:30 from my parents house. We had swung through to see the damage done by the kitchen fire they just had, what we didn't know is that we had our own damage. Apparently, we had missed the Micro burst winds by about 5 minutes. Our neighbors were all just wandering out of their houses to assess the damages. Sadly, our maple tree took a huge hit. We lost about 1/3 of the branches in the middle. So, after we made sure everyone else was ok, we lit some candles and played hand and foot until it was time for bed. The power was out for 17 hours and we are not sure if we can save the tree yet or not. What a weekend!!!!

Brian was finally able to deliver one of the biggest jobs he ever shot! He spent the last 18 months shooting all the different aspects of potato growing and harvesting. It culminated in 58 wall prints, either gallery wrapped or framed. This is what the truck looked like after they were all packed back up to deliver to the company! This is an extreme load off of Brian's mind!

Conference Weekend...

Conference weekend we ran away to the island...Island Park. We rented a cabin just so we could watch conference...oh, and drive into Yellowstone. It has been a while since we were there. Brian's parents met us up there and we were able to watch 3 of the 4 conference sessions with them. We then took them on the upper loop of Yellowstone. Apparently all the animals were on strike...we only saw a small herd of elk at the Madison. But it was a beautiful warm (hot) day none the less.

After a shoot that we had to do in Boise, we decided to take the long way home. We drove through the mountains to Stanley Lake. Of course, we spent a little time taking some images and wishing we had the camper. It was a beautiful late summer weekend.

Brian and I spent the evening with Tim and Johnna Tanner. They took us to the Bar J Chuckwagon dinner show as a thank you to Brian for helping Tim with his shoot back east. As usual the entertainment was fantastic! We then spent the night in Jackson and got up early to see the "usual" photographer sites. We need to do this more often.

School is Cool!

Well, another semester has begun. I love fall because of the cool weather, but the first day of the semester it was cold, wet and blowing! I hope that this isn't a omen of the semester to come! Brian and I are taking a pottery class as well! Thought it would be fun to get a little muddy...I am just afraid that I will like it and then we will have another expensive hobby on our hands!

So as the storm blew in this evening, Brian and I decided to try and chase down some lightning. We tried it last week and all we got was wet and muddy. Anyway, we got a few shots tonight of a few bolts. Harder than it looks to catch lightning in a camera! Still it was fun!

Grandma's Funeral

My Grandma Weeks passed away July 14th and we had her funeral on Saturday the 17th. It was a wonderful funeral, great speakers, great songs and a beautiful warm day. She was a great lady and she will be missed.

Koi Kare...

Well, we are dealing with more trauma in the Pond..or as Brian calls it, the Money Pit!!! Over the last 2 weeks we hadn't seen the 5 new fish that we bought. Saturday when we finally saw the 2 yellow koi, one of them wasn't looking to great. As we investigated further we found the dead carcii of 2 of the other 3 fish. After much internet research, we found out that the pond has a parasite that is attacking the fish. The larger fish (yellows) were still hanging on because they were...well, larger. But this morning we lost another one. So, this afternoon, we got serious, Brian caught the sole survivor...who was lethargic and showing signs of being really sick. Dr. B then gave the poor little guy a salt bath, then a medicated fresh water bath. We have added a treatment to the pond and in a week, we treat it again. Only then can our poor lonely little fishy friend go back in and swim freely. Wish us luck, better than that...wish our fish luck!!! By the way, we still haven't named him...any thoughts!

Last night, Brian and I had been working out in the garage, enjoying the warm weather, when he decided we needed Ice Cream. As we headed out a thunderstorm started brewing overhead. I love a good summer storm, especially when it is warm. It cools the nights down so nice.

So we sat on our patio under the eaves as it rained and cracked lightning, generally enjoying the moment. Then all of a sudden, wham, Hail. We scrambled for the shelter of the garage, wondering what would be left of our already pathetic garden. It didn't last long. thank heavens!

Pond Poo Gone!!!

Well, we finally did it! The annual pond cleaning happened today. We have been trying to clean the pond since the middle of April, but every weekend has turned out cold and nasty, until today...sort of! We decided it was now or never, either it got cleaned today or we would just start filling it in with dirt. We ahve never cleaned it this late in the season. As we got started around 10:30, it was overcast but not windy, which is nice. However, while I was standing in the muck pulling out the lillies (we had to split them), it started to hail. Ouch! We hid out in the garage for a while until the weather finally cooperated and we finished at 8 p.m. We were wet, covered in fish poo, very tired and sore. It was time for a hot shower, ibuprofen and a soft seat. Hopefully tomorrow we will enjoy it again...

Again, snow...will it ever stop! I know that there wasn't enough to stick but come on! Brian and I had been planning on cleaning the pond this weekend, well that got postponed! Again! No way did we want to be out in the blizzard... no hail... no rain... no wind...no...sunshine! I am so confused, but worse than that...the weather is more CONFUSED! Please say we will hit temperatures over 70 soon!!!

Well, we just got back from Vacation! It was Sunny the entire time we were in Arizona and then we came back to the cloudy gloom of Idaho. I keep telling myself that summers in Idaho are much better than they would be in Tucson...if Spring is 90 degrees there....I don't want to see August. Our last day of vacation was very different. Dieta Jensen had invited us, along with other photographers to come and photograph their annual cattle round up. Hey why not, I had never seen one before. Mom and Dad were both there. Mom was the one that got us invited. It was fun, shooting cowboys and cows, watching how the handled the calves...then eating lunch with all of the people there. However, the wind was just to much, we finally had had enough of the cold. (Welcome back to Idaho!) We headed home to brush off the dust, unpack and sleep in our own bed. I love vacation!

On our way through, we stopped and saw Greg and Shari and their little families! Kaitlyn was in her School Program that night, so we decided to stay and watch our little star! We learned all about Utah, we have to admit, it was really well done! Even Carly liked to show! Afterward we went out for Pizza before heading to Preston. Birthday Time for Tam

Our little vacation was not really planned around my birthday, but hey, celebrate while you can! Boy did we! Actually it wasn't too bad, we ended up staying in Beaver (yes Beaver, Utah) that night. We were just taking our time traveling along and well...you never know where you will end up. However, if you are ever in Beaver, you need to stop and eat at the little Family Diner off of the exit. Wow! It was a good birthday dinner.

We spent the night before and the morning of my birthday admiring the beautiful scenery of the Grand. It was a good place to be on a birthday, it makes you realize that no matter how hold you are... it just doesn't matter in Geologic time!

OK, we didn't really want to get too close to Mexico...especially with all the drug war problems down there, but we decided to go see another mission that was in ruins. It was a nice drive. Oh, then we went and saw a few more cacti!

Saguaro cactus

OK, we are enamored by the saguaro cacti. It was so fun looking for the quintessential (road runner & coyote) cactus. And man they are tall! Did you know that they only start growing their arms after they are 12 feet tall and that they only grow about 2-3 inches a year! Some of these cactus are hundreds of years old!

So we taped up the windows of our car last night because the police warned us that it was 100% chance that the car could be stolen if they could see the broken windows. We did a pretty good job I thought. The hotel let us park under the canopy that night so they could watch it for us. And by noon the next day we had new glass in the windows and we were heading to Saguaro National Park. By the way, the thief only got our huge tripod....that pinches fingers, and a bag of wood that we had just bought. I was more upset about the wood...it is extremely rare and gorgeous (the same thing Brian made my earrings out of for Valentines). Did I mention earlier that this was an adventure!

That same day we went to a botanical garden. We walked outdoors in the wonderful sunshine then spent hours in a butterfly garden mesmerized by the newly hatched butterflies. Afterwards we headed for the air conditioning of our hotel room...while we were relaxing there we got a phone call from the front desk. Our car had been broken into and the cops were outside waiting for us to make a report. Funny part, our car was right below our window and we didn't hear a thing.

Second Day of Sunshine

Our first full day in Arizona started early. We headed out to the 300 year old San Xavier Mission. We spent hours taking images of this beautifully restored mission and the cactus gardens surrounding it. Did I mention that it was 85 degrees by 11:00 a.m. :)

I just heard from Marie and Dave that they were in a car accident on their way back from a spring break trip. They totalled their vehicle but all four in their little family walked away with only some bruises and some sore ribs. I am so happy that they are all OK and I know that this world would be a sad, bland place without these special people in our life!

I got the chance to watch Karson for a few hours last Wednesday. He was so fun and well behaved. We had a great time, but when I got the camera out, it was time to goof off and show me his bellybutton. Yeah, he was being silly but I love that cute little smile anyway!

Teaching Time

Brian got the chance to teach woodturning again at his Woodcraft Guild meeting in March. He showed them how to wow their wives by turning a pendant necklace. They enjoyed the demonstration and a few even tried their hand at it afterward. To top off the night, Tam and Brian tied for first place in the Gold challenge. Into the Vortex!!

Mission Possible??

OK, for one of Brian's Christmas presents I had some of his Mission slides scanned. The idea was to surprise him with a scrapbook of his Mission...well, I wasn't there so I really needed his input to create the book. On Christmas day he received a DVD with the pictures in a slideshow, explaining what I needed him to do to help me accomplish this for him. We have a tradition of creating the "9 month" Christmas gift, so this year it was his turn. These are just a few images that will be going in the book. Look close, Brian is in them, but you may see Ozzie and Marc as well. Enjoy the images because I am sure I will get in trouble for posting them. :)

Valentines!

Valentines was such a relaxing day for us. Brian and I just hung out at the house and made our own "better than restaurant" dinner. Rib eye steak and lobster! Yum! We played cards and then stuck map pins in Brian's new US Map. We are tracking all the places that we have been together. It will also help us plan our next adventure!!! So far the poor map is lopsided...alot of pins in the west, not so much on the eastern side! We better start planning!

Handmade gifts are always the best!! This is what Brian made me for Valentines this year. He made the earrings to match the necklace that he gave me last fall. They are out of Desert Ironwood burl and so much fun to wear! The thin pair are two inches round and the smaller ones about the size of a quarter. I am still to chicken to try and turn something that tiny. I am so glad that I bought him that lathe!! :)

OK, it is good to have a handy man around the house!! Brian was able to diagnose the washer's problem with a little help from his friend Larry! Then it was off to the store to buy belts. Who knew that a washer needed two. Anyway he was able to fix the beastie and the mountain of laundry has been scaled! At least until next week when we start the laundry process over again.

Oh and when it is said that these things come in three's...they are right! A few nights later, Brian busted the snowblower pull start! He and his dad spent 2 hours fixing that little oops! They were laughing afterwards because they actually took every screw off of the blower to repair it and when they put it back together...they didn't have any left over! Which is a good thing, right?

What a Week!!

OK...you have heard about the laptop, but let me go on...I have laryngitis! I have had it for a week. Brian is truly enjoying it, but I am fed up with being sick. So I finally feel good enough to get something done today and I start on the mountain of laundry. 15 minutes into the first load I hear a loud screeching noise. I run in to find that the washing machine isn't working. AAARGH. Everything I am touching lately! So, when Brian came home from work, he took a look at it...prognosis is still pending. So, I have a mountain and a mudhill (the load that was half washed) of laundry to do when and if my washing machine gets fixed. I really, really, really want to run away to Tahiti right now!

Laptop Dilema!

So, as usual I was working my finger to the bone with photo editing the last few months, looking forward to a few weeks to just play. So, what do you think should happen...I actually was opening my first play image and POOF! The display disappeared! :( Yeah, I am sure you know what I did. Yes! I walked calmly to where Brian was and told him in hushed and controlled tones..."MY COMPUTER JUST DIED". Of course, the empathy was instantaneous!

I guess after 7 years of servitude the poor little computer does deserve a rest...Why do I tell you all of this?

Well, prayers are answered! I can't live without a computer attached to my fingertips, it's what I do! Anyway, so today out of the blue we got a phone call asking if we knew of anyone that would like to buy a slightly used laptop!!! Ummm...well...us! Amazing how the heavens open just at the right time. So, I am back in business, let's hope this one lasts another 7 years, Brian might have his hearing back by then!

Back at Greg & Rachel's house we exchanged our gifts. The kids then watched a movie while the rest of us actually got a chance to visit. It was a wonderful time and so good to be together. Merry Christmas!

First a little Football! Greg took the boys outside and they had a little football game...the best part was when Logan, Jaxton and Conner conspired to "run" the ball. Good thing Logan is tall and buff, because it appears the football grew! Conner seemed to enjoy this...so did all the others.

I can't believe that it is October already. I really haven't a clue where September went. But, with parents dealing with health issues and school starting, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. They say that time stands still...I guess I missed the microsecond that it did. I feel like the older I get, the faster the year goes by! Remember when it felt like 10 years between each birthday...and now it feels like 10 minutes. Well, enough rambling for the night!!!! Time's a wasting! :)

The Hobbs family got together for a BBQ at Greg's house right before Dad was to have his back surgery. We enjoyed the warm weather, dutch oven cooking, fresh peas and watching the kids all run around and have fun. It was nice to get together and have those warm memories...especially since it is cold out now!

Dave and Marie brought their little family for a visit this summer. We hung out at the house and let the kids play with the neighbors, fed the geese on the greenbelt and went to Bear World. We bear-ly enough time to fit the huge amount of fun we had...but we gave it our best shot!

In July we celebrated Brian's Grandma Jewel's 90th Birthday party. The entire family got together at Sandpiper for a surprise dinner. It was really nice, she didn't expect a thing, she definitely didn't expect her granddaughter and her children to be there. Then she surprised us when she jumped on the back of Doug's Harley to go for a little ride. Yes, she will be around for a long, long time! Oh, the picture below is both of Brian's grandmothers...both 90...both wonderful, and as Ken said...180 years of experience!

4th of July fun!

My parents and youngest brothers family joined us for the festivities on the Fourth! We started out by watching fireworks on the 3rd, then an early morning wake up and drive to Driggs for the balloon festival! The fun didn't end there, after breakfast in a park, the sharpshooters of the family practiced their skills by paintballing live subjects! It was for a scout troop fundraiser and I believe everyone enjoyed it...except the targets. On the way back you have to stop for square ice cream. After lounging around the house and a quick BBQ, we went over to a park to shoot off illegal fireworks...OK, my brother bought them! I hate to say it but they are only illegal in Utah. Having lived in Idaho Falls for a few 4ths...they were just not that impressive but Kaitlyn was still worried that we, especially her father, would still end up in jail! I loved having them here and hopefully we can do it again!

Brian and I caught up with a few friends over in the Challis area. Paul and Ozzy had taken their families to Pauls cabin for a week of fun. They invited us over, but since we were still in school, we could only spend a few days. But fun it was! There truly is never a dull moment when we all get together and with all those boys...whew! Shonnee and Jess were so mellow...OK, Jess was sick most the time, but still. Anyway, we toured the old gold dredge, man that was interesting and then we went to Custer, a little ghosttown in the area. Ozzy and some of the boys caught gold fever and panned for gold. Sadly, they will never get rich but they had alot of fun. Thanks for letting us come play Paul!
